Star Trek 50th Anniversary (and September events)

st50Airing on the NBC network the night of Thursday, September 8, 1966 at 7:30pm the world was officially introduced to Star Trek. It took two pilots, several recasting and the support of the Desilu studios (then owned by Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz) to finally get the USS Enterprise off the ground and into television history.

Do you recall the first time you saw Star Trek?  Was it during the original run in the 60’s?  The re-runs of the 70’s or the movies of the 80’s?  Perhaps it was one of the many spin offs or even the new Kelvin-timeline based movies.  No matter what introduced you to our favorite franchise, being a Star Trek fan automatically makes you a friend that we want to talk to.  We tip our hat to the 50th Anniversary of Star Trek and look forward to many more years to come of new movies, TV series, conventions, comics, books, games and more.

As most of you know, part of our charter is to provide community service.  We are trying to make our world a better place as seen in the 24th century.  In early September at Salt Lake Comic Con (and with the help of the Seventh Fleet) we raised about $300 for the Best Friends Animal Society of Utah.  This is a no-kill shelter that has helped hundreds of dogs and cats (and other animals) find good homes.  Thank you to everyone who helped put the Borg Alcove together, helped man the booth or even just stopped by to donate.  A special thank you goes out to Dan Farr, Bryan Brandenburg and all of the Salt Lake Comic Con volunteers for putting on such a wonderful event.

Wednesday, September 14th at 7:00pm we will be holding our monthly meeting. This will be at the Weber County Library Southwest Branch in Roy (2039 West 4000 South).  This meeting is open to the general public so feel free to invite any friends who may be interested in checking out our free Star Trek fan club.  Don’t forget  your Star Trek/SF show and tell items.

Department Heads we will be holding a staff meeting on Friday, September 16th at 7:00pm.   This will be at Starbase 40.   Please RSVP with the CO.

We will be holding our 50th Anniversary Party on Saturday, September 17th from 6pm-9pm at the home of Captain Stark (Starbase 40) in Clearfield.  Bring light snacks to share as we watch the first several episodes of Star Trek.

The next Saturday, September 24th also at Starbase 40 we will be holding a Star Trek game night.  from 6pm-9pm we will be watching Star Trek Scene It and answering the trivia questions.  Again bring light snacks for this event.

Don’t forget that in October we are planning to visit the Living Planet Aquarium in Salt Lake.

Star Trek now airing on KTVX 4.2 in Utah

As a Star Trek club in Utah, we wanted to support any local business that brought us Star Trek.  We have been waiting for any of the local television stations to bring Star Trek back on the local airwaves.  KTVX has stepped forward with the Original Star Trek TV series.  Starting on July 30th the digital sub-net KTVX 4.2 started showing Me-TV.  This network airs episodes of the Original Star Trek every Saturday night at 7:00pm.  This network can be seen on 4.2 over-the-air or on Comcast cable at channel 104.  On Saturday, 8-4 the episode will be The Immunity Syndrome and on 8-11 they will be airing A Piece of the Action.    Me-TV also shows other classic science-fiction shows such as Batman, Lost in Space, The Twilight Zone, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea and The Wild Wild West.

If a local television station is willing to syndicate episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Voyager or Star Trek: Enterprise, we will promote them as well.  Thank you KTVX Ch 4.

UPDATE: Apparently the local feed is airing at 8:00pm not 7:00.  And someone asked if the episodes are the re-mastered versions.  Me-TV is airing the re-mastered editions.

Fake Star Trek script warning

Author/scriptwriter David Gerrold wrote several books and scripts for the different Star Trek series.  If you do not know his name, I’d suggest clicking on the link in this post and read about his various contributions to our favorite series.

David posted this warning on his Facebook wall and asked that we pass on the information:  “All right, all Star Trek fans — PLEASE SHARE THIS INFORMATION. There is an “unproduced Star Trek script” being sold on eBay and at conventions, ostensibly written by DC Fontana. It is a phony. It is called “Stars Of Sargasso” and is about Joanna McCoy, and is credited to DC Fontana, intended for TOS Season 4. DC Fontana says it is fake. She never wrote any such script.” (end of quote from David)

This fake script has been put on the internet if you really would like to read it.  You can find the story here.

45th Anniversary of Star Trek

On September 8, 1966 at 8:30pm TV audiences were introduced to Star Trek.  NBC aired the first episode on this date that was titled “The Man Trap.”  Most viewers were watching it on television sets that were only black and white.  Now we can dust off the old VCR tapes, put in the trusty DVD (original or new high-def) and even stream the episodes online through Netflix or from a variety of websites.  This streaming even allows us to watch Star Trek over our smart phones and tablet devices.   In a few more years, who knows what new technology will allow us to enjoy episodes of our favorite Science Fiction series.

So the questions we have today are, what are your favorite memories of the original Star Trek series?  What will you do to celebrate the anniversary?  Let us know by posting in the comments section below.  We would love to hear your ideas.

Netflix to stream all Star Trek tv series

For years Star Trek fans in Utah have been waiting for one of the local television stations to pick up any of the Star Trek series to show in syndication.  We have seen stations in other parts of the country airing Star Trek: The Next Generation.  We were also hoping that Deep Space Nine, Voyager or Enterprise would also be released to local stations for syndication.   The moment we hear of a local station showing any of the Star Trek series in syndication, we will promote it here.

Until then, we have been given another option to buying all of the DVDs.  Today Netflix and CBS announced an agreement to allow Netflix to stream various CBS shows to their customers.  This will start in April and continue for two years.  Details on this announcement can be found here:

If you had a choice, which Star Trek series would you like to see on local syndication?

Hallmark 2011 Christmas Ornaments

Various companies use the San Diego Comic Con to announce upcoming items that may interest fans.  According to TrekMovie, in 2011 Hallmark will be releasing three new Christmas ornaments.  They include the Romulan Bird-of-Prey (pictured), Mr. Spock from the Legends series and a scene from the Original Star Trek episode Mirror, Mirror (with dialog clip).  These should be released in July 2011 with the prices to be announced later.

Currently available at Hallmark stores are the entries into the 2010 Star Trek series.  These include Captain Kirk from the Legends series, a scene ornament from the Original Star Trek episode Amok Time and the USS Enterprise from the 2009 Star Trek movie.   Who has picked up these ornaments and what do you think of them?
