Whew, we made it past the first (and record breaking) Salt Lake Comic Con. 70,000 to 80,000 fans packed the Salt Palace at this three day event making it the largest convention (of any type) in Utah and the second largest event after the 2002 Olympics. We met a lot of new friends and had some old friends show up. We had a lot of fun volunteering at the convention or at the Seventh Fleet booth (the Star Trek bridge simulator was a very popular destination at the con). The Salt Lake Comic Con held a very moving tribute to the late Captain Ruth Burns. The master of ceremonies, Tony Toscano asked the convention attendees at the Grand Ballroom for William Shatner’s speech to give Ruth a really big cheer (instead of a moment of silence). The entire room erupted in memory of our fallen comrade.
We could see some new faces at our next USS Ticonderoga meeting on Wednesday, September 11th. So be at the basement meeting room in the Davis County North library in Clearfield at 7:00pm (address 562 South 1000 East). We would love to hear about your experiences at the comic con, see the photos you took and the loot you came back with. We will also be talking about our fall events (Halloween party, corn maze visit, Rifftrax: Night of the Living Dead and more). Bring a friend and come to have fun. We will see you at the meeting.
