USS Ticonderoga and USS Kelly Activities this week

Greetings Crew.  This week we have two activities that we want to bring up.   The first is a fun activity at Boondocks in Kaysville.  The second is a fund raiser auction for our mothership, the USS Kelly.

On Tuesday, June 14th is the monthly USS Ticonderoga activity.  The crew voted to go to the Boondocks Fun Center located at 525 S. Deseret Drive in Kaysville.  This is where we held the lasertag activity in February.  The official start time will be 5:00 pm, though you can get there as early as you’d like.  Cost is $17.00 per person for unlimited activities (i.e. everything), which is less than the regular child’s rate on other days.  Since Captain Erica Stark will be attending a special conference for some Commanding Officers (uh…ok fine she’s going to a Lunch Lady Convention) the Ticonderoga Executive Officer Lt. Dave Stock will be in charge, so make sure you check in with him.  Rear Admiral Stark will also be in attendance, so consider it open season in lasertag, boat battles and go-kart races.  Currently some of the crew are sending in their suggestions to Lt. Stock on where they would like to go for dinner after the fun.  If you have any suggestions, email him at

On Saturday, June 18th is the USS Kelly auction.  As you all know we do not charge dues to join our chapters or the Seventh Fleet.  So every once in a while a fund raiser is held to cover basic operational costs.  Since the Kelly is our mothership and since they have come to our past auctions, we would like to encourage you to attend this function.  We do not Stand Alone!!!!   This will start with lunch at 12:00pm (Corrected the time to noon).  Lunch will be $3.00/plate or $12.00/family (4+).  The auction will start after lunch and contains a lot of Star Trek and Science Fiction/Fantasy collectables.  The location for the auction will be 12172 South 3040 West Riverton, Utah.

If you have any questions on the activities, or an other upcoming events seen on the Events Page, feel free to contact your Department Chief or the Executive Officer.

May activity Utah Renaissance Festival and Fantasy Faire

The USS Ticonderoga May activity is coming up on Saturday the 21st.  We will be going to the 6th Annual Utah Renaissance Festival and Fantasy Faire just west of Ogden.  We will be meeting at the festival at noon and spending the day taking in the sights.

If you have attended past festival, remember that they have moved to a new location this year.  The address is 1700 West 1350 South, Marriott-Slaterville, Utah.  Directions: 12th street exit, turn west to 1900 w. Turn left (south) for 200 yards, then turn left again and head east, following the signs.

Admission is $12 for adults (12 to 64), $6 for children (3-11), $10 for senior citizens (65+), $10 for those attending in full renaissance garb, $10 for Federal employees (plus 1 guest at $10 as well) and $10 for Military (plus 1 guest at $10).

Last year we met a fan wearing a Star Trek Voyager uniform at the festival.  Do we want to try to go in uniform or stick with traditional renaissance style costumes?

Laser Tag at Boondocks

Here is a group shot of the USS Ticonderoga crewmembers who had fun at the Laser Tag event last Saturday.

Laser Tag fun at Boondocks

We really liked this arena as they had several styles of games that we could play and kids of all ages could participate.  It was discovered that they have unlimited laser tag games for $10/person from 6:00-10:00pm on Sunday.  Would you be willing to participate in a Sunday event?

The USS Ticonderoga will be returning to Boondocks on Saturday, June 18th to participate in their outdoor events (batting cages, miniature golf, go-kart racing, bumper boats w/water cannons, etc.)

Ideas for 2011 Ticonderoga events

So at the January USS Ticonderoga meeting the crew discussed several ideas for upcoming events.  The events and activities are separate from the monthly USS Ticonderoga Meeting which is always held every second Wednesday of the month at the Weber County Library (25th and Jefferson in Ogden).  The events can be held on different dates depending upon the type of event.  Some months we can have more than one event depending upon the situation.  Most of the events are held for fun but there are also other events for community service and to help the crew in various projects.

Here is a tentative list of the events that were discussed at the meeting.  We are still looking for ideas for events as well as some of these events are not set in stone.

January: Admiral’s Banquet in Midvale (29th)

February: Laser Tag at Boondocks in Kaysville (19th)

March: St. Patrick’s Day Party at Hollie’s in Clinton (17th)

April: Star Trek Movie Marathon at TBA (2nd), Starfest Convention in Denver (15th-17th)

May: Utah Renaissance Festival & Fantasy Faire in Marriott-Slaterville (21st)

June: Boondocks events in Kaysville (18th)

July: Independence Day BBQ at TBA (4th), Harry Potter movie outing at Coleman’s Motor-Vu Drive In in Riverdale (Date TBA)

August: Seventh Fleet Olympics at TBA (Date TBA)

September: Adopt-A-Highway clean up and BBQ (Date TBA)

October: USS Voyager Simulator (8th), Halloween Party at TBA (31st)

November: LAN Party & Thanksgiving Leftovers Pot Luck at Dave Stock’s house in Syracuse (25th-26th)

December: New Years Eve Midwinter BBQ at Dave Stock’s house in Syracuse (31st)

Alternate Activities under consideration: Utah Museum of Natural History, Rocket launch, Paintball.

If you have any suggestions for activities, feel free to post them in the comments section.

Ticonderoga January Meeting

The January USS Ticonderoga meeting is a special thing.  Especially this one.  First this will be the last meeting under command of Captain Carl Stark.  At the end of the month he will be promoted to Rear Admiral and be moving to his new duties as a member of Admiral Hollinger’s staff.

The second reason is that this is the time that we ask the crew to help fill in our activity calendar for 2011.  We already know that January’s activity will be the Admiral’s Banquet.  The August activity is the Seventh Fleet Olympics and December’s activity will be our New Years Eve party.  However the rest of the time we want to know what the crew wants to do for fun.

So come for one more attempt at giving Captain Stark a hard time and let’s hear your ideas for what you would like to do for the upcoming year.

Additional Note: Lt. Commander Rhonda Hollinger has informed me that she can still take money for the Admiral’s Banquet if you still would like to go.  It is $13/person for a Chicken BBQ Buffet at Joe Morley’s BBQ in Midvale.  The banquet is on Saturday, January 29th.

November Ticonderoga Activity: Harry Potter viewing

For the month of November the crew of the USS Ticonderoga will be going to the Layton Tinsletown to watch the latest Harry Potter movie, The Deathly Hallows Part I.  This will be on Saturday the 20th and we will be meeting at the theater at 4:30pm.   We will be getting in on the last matinée viewing at 5:10pm.  The tickets will be $6.25.  We would recommend getting the tickets in advance.  The address to the theater is 720 West 1500 North next to the Layton Hills Mall.  NOTE: Originally we were planning to go to the Megaplex 13 but they had already sold out several weeks ago.

Lt. Frank Buck is willing to swing by and pick up tickets for crewmembers.  If you want to make arrangements with him you can email him at

Before the movie we will vote on where we want to go to dinner when the movie has been completed.  Some of the nominees are New York Pizza Department (next to the theaters), Asian Buffet (next to Pet’s Mart on Hill Field Road) or the new Five Guys Burgers and Fries on Antelope Drive.

Ticonderoga Halloween Events

We have a very cool opportunity to have two Halloween events at the end of October.  One of them will even fall under our Community Service mission.  First we’ve been invited to the First Annual Ogden Zombie Crawl in downtown Ogden on Friday, October 29th.  It was specifically requested that we have several dead Trekkies on hand for the crawl at 4:30-5:00pm at the Union Station.  They extended the offer for our group through Robert Aswin of the ERT Ghostbusters of Salt Lake.  Robert use to be a member of the Ticonderoga and after moving to Salt Lake is now a member of our sister ship, the USS Kelly.  We hope to see other members of the Seventh Fleet in attendance as well.  Any of us who show up to be dead Trekkies (or help in other matters) will be able to get into the post-party for free.  There will also be a special showing of Night of the Living Dead and (for an extra charge) an overnight ghost hunt/Paranormal sleepover at the Ogden Union Station.  If you would like to participate in this, please contact Captain Carl Stark so he can pass on your name to Robert.  I would recommend reading the rules listed and then deciding how you would like to help.  The Zombie Crawl will have make up artists on hand to help zombify you.  The proceeds from this event are donated to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.  Thus we will be awarding service points towards rank advancements for those who participate.

Our second fun Halloween event is our annual USS Ticonderoga Halloween Party on Saturday, October 30th.  This year we have moved the party to the home of Crewman Hollie Caudell in Clinton.  Anyone can show up after 4:30pm.  There will be three firepits and we are looking at watching some comedy/horror films together.  Currently in the running is Zombieland and Shaun of the Dead.  Crewman Caudell will be providing hamburgers and hot dogs for grilling.  Bring your own drinks and a dish to share.  Also for the trick or treaters, please bring a bag of candy.  We will have several adult volunteers to take the kids trick-or-treating around the neighborhood.  This is our official activity for the month.

Looking forward to seeing everyone.

USS Ticonderoga Activity: Wings and Wheels

At our September meeting the crew voted for our September USS Ticonderoga activity.  We will be going to the Wings and Wheels Car and Airplane show at the Hill AFB Museum on Saturday, September 18th.  This will also count as one of our community service events since the “cost” of admission is a non-perishable item for the local food drive.

There will be classic and unique cars on display and the museum will have an “Open cockpit” option on several airplanes.  There will also be live music and a chili cook off during the day.  This will start at 9:00am and run until 4:30pm.  Try to be there as early as possible and we will meet together near the entrance.  This would also be a good event to bring the kids or new recruits who are interested in checking out the club.

Seventh Fleet Olympic Schedule

As requested, here is the schedule for the upcoming Seventh Fleet Olympics.  This fleet wide event will be held on Saturday, August 21 at the Chapel Park (152 South 900 East) in Layton and will be hosted by the USS Retributor.  I would recommend arriving early to sign up for the entries that you wish to participate in.  I’m not certain if the number of slots are limited.

The events are divided into three categories.  Cadet (younger crewmembers), Ship (low active) and Away Team (very active).  This way there are events for everyone to medal in.  Some are team based, some are individual based.

Independence Day Road Trip

So for the month of July the Acting Captain of the USS Ticonderoga will be Lt. Dave Stock.  The Acting Captain program was set up to give Ticonderoga Crewmembers experience in leadership and command.   For our activity in July, we will be taking a road trip over the Independence Day weekend.  Acting Captain Stock has beachfront property at Bear Lake (with all of the amenities such as fire-pits, plumbing, etc.) and has invited anyone from the Seventh Fleet to join us for camping and relaxing.  We haven’t had a USS Ticonderoga campout in about 4-5 years.  This beachfront property is the same location that the 2004 Seventh Fleet Olympics was held.  We will have fireworks, swimming, group breakfast and a Shisk-ka-Bob BBQ.  There is also a 4th of July Parade at a small town nearby and a cave we can visit as well.  If you are interested in going, contact the Captain ASAP.
